Description:2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of violence in Northern Ireland in the context of the conflict commonly referred to as ‘The Troubles’. Since the early 2000s, as the 1998 Good Friday Agreement began to bear fruit and following paramilitary decommissioning, the world’s attention has shifted away from Northern Ireland as the province moved on from the darkest days of the 1960s-90s. Critically, this shift has been accompanied by an increasing lack of awareness in the UK of Irish affairs, of the constitutional settlement on the island of Ireland, and of the current status of Anglo-Irish relations. Somewhat paradoxically, this can readily be seen as a positive thing, as it has happened in tandem with life in Northern Ireland and in the Irish borderlands moving on from decades of conflict. However, this lack of familiarity has been thrown into sharp relief, and takes on a much more pressing and threatening form, given the UK’s proposed withdrawal from the EU, and the questions this raises about the nature of the Irish border. Pronouncements by some senior figures in UK politics and media betray a dangerous lack of awareness of what the current constitutional settlement is and why it is important, what the current nature of Anglo-Irish relations is, and what issues remain unresolved, as the border remains a key sticking point in the Brexit negotiations, as the Stormont executive remains on hiatus, and as the UK’s future relations with itself, with its nearest neighbours, and with the rest of Europe remain in flux. This short book seeks to fill a gap that exists in the collective political consciousness in the UK when it comes to politics on the island of Ireland, and the nature of the constitutional settlement on these islands. Conclusions will be drawn from expert interviews with key figures from politics, civil society, NGOs, and academia in Belfast, Brussels, Dublin, and London, that will be undertaken specifically for this project. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
