Sir Robert Stout: a Biography

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (24133 ratings)
Description:The influence of Sir Robert Stout on the development of New Zealand began in the pioneering days and lasted till modern times. He arrived in Dunedin in 1864, and died in Wellington in 1930, having been Premier, Chief Justice, and Chancellor of the University. His premiership was during the economic depression of the eighties, but he had already been a prominent figure in the Grey Government of the seventies, and was again in Parliament under Seddon in the nineties. Indeed, it had been widely expected that he would succeed Ballance as Premier, and the circumstances which led to Seddon's taking and retaining power are discussed in this book. Stout remained in Parliament till 1897, and was appointed Chief Justice in 1899; he held this office till 1926.Stout was obliged to interrupt his political activities more than once to devote himself to his legal career, but from the time he worked as a schoolteacher on his arrival in the country he never lost interest in furthering education. When Premier he was also Minister of Education, and throughout his life he was associated with university work. His efforts were largely responsible for the establishment of Victoria University College in 1899. He was Chancellor of the University of New Zealand for twenty years, and a member of the Senate till his death. An indefatigable worker, Stout wrote and spoke continually on political, social, legal and educational subjects. The authors of this book have critically examined the multifarious aspects of his work and character, and offer an unbiased picture of a man whose life was interwoven with New Zealand history. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
