Crapo self-published this ghosted autobiography in 1893, and turned eventually to the coastal cargo trade until May 1899 when in an attempt to repeat his former triumphs he left New Bedford in a 9 foot dinghy, bound for Cuba. His body was recovered off Charleston some time later. Mrs C. was left penniless and re-issued her late husband's 'autobiography' to raise funds.
