Journey By Stages: Some Account of the People who Travelled by Stage-Coach and Mail in the Years between 1660 and 1840

Stella Margetson
4.9/5 (33205 ratings)
Description:'Journey By Stage' is an entertaining account of stage-coach and mail between 1660 and 1840. It is essentially a light-hearted book, with an emphasis on the human side - on the travellers themselves, their suffering, their pleasures, the length of their journeys, and their treatment at the inns. Based on their comments, it includes both the famous, like Jane Austen and Constable, and some obscure folk, like Ralph Thoresby and Pastor Moritz, who left a mass of lively observation in their diaries and letters. The detailed and satisfying effect is accentuated by the splendid illustrations - some of them in colour. At the beginning of the seventeenth century nobody travelled for pleasure and ordinary people did not travel at all, except by waggon; but in Restoration England coach travel began to be popular, and Pepys could make the journey from London to Bath in three days. Inns varied, but the food could be excellent and regional delicacies abounded. The shocking state of the roads in Queen Anne's time held back any improvements and there were very real dangers attached to riding the 'rumble-tumble', or rear basket, and on top of the coach. But by the end of the century came greater comforts for coach travellers. With the appearance of the first mail-coach, people living all over Britain were linked together, and those bringing news of victory in the Napoleonic wars enjoyed an almost royal progress. The first road maps by Cary in 1799, giving information about the great houses and estates, increased enthusiasm for the beauty of the countryside. During the Golden Age of coaching, England was the envy of the world, and there was excitement, too, on the Brighton road where Regency bucks raced as drivers. The opening ot the first railway in 1838 widened horizons still further, but with it, sadly, came a sudden decline in coaching. The discomforts and disasters were forgotten in a romantic glow of reminiscence which, aided by Dickens, has lasted to the present day.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
