Born in 1853 in Connecticut, in 1886 aged 33 he completed an 11,000 mile journey across the United States on a 46" nickel plated Columbia Expert (penny farthing) bicycle. (The published account of this trip was entitled 'Pedal and Path: Across the Continent Awheel and Afoot'). He also made budget traveller trips to Panama, Hawaii and Alaska (in 1912), Europe, Argentine, Chile and Panama (1914), a 30,000 mile trip to Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia (1916), and in 1922 a 35,000 mile trip to Japan, China, Hong Kong, India, South Africa, Egypt, Italy and France.
