It shows how the Whitlam Labor government fulfilled some of the New Left's aspirations, but contributed to its slow decline. The book chronicles the rise from the mid-1980s onwards of a Labor Left, divided into factions seeking to win power in student elections with little concern for policies. This mirrored a similar process in the Labor Party. While the legend of the "New Left" continues to haunt activists of the far left, many observers of Labor Party politics are intrigued by the role of Sydney University as a training ground for the factions which pervade the Party in both Sydney and Canberra.
