Description:The publication in London in 1872 of An Australian Parsonage; or, the Settler and the Savage in Western Australia was an event of more than passing interest to colonists, for it included anecdotes concerning several un-named, but readily recognisable, people. However, the authoress, Mrs Edward Millett, wife of an English clergyman, was not a scandal-monger, so her stories gave no offence. The Millett's decision to go to Australia may have been made following a visit to the International Exhibition in London in 1862, where they would have seen an impressive collection of Western Australian products, manufactures and artefacts. Mrs Millett certainly studied the descriptive catalogue in which the exhibits were listed. The reason for the decision was her husband's ill-health. He suffered from tic douloureux, an extremely painful neurological disorder causing convulsive face-twitching. After some years under the car of leading physicians in England, to no avail, he resorted to the use of morphina despite the risk of addiction. he had served in two large parishes and was well regarded as a chaplain, but he 'gave up the prospects of an early preferment in England for the sake of the sea voyage and warm climate involved in the acceptance of a chaplaincy in Western Australia', where he hoped for relief from his disorder. Mrs Millett endeavoured to learn more of the country of their adoption, but deplored the fact that there was little to be read apart from parliamentary papers and government books. The only guide-book available to her had been printed before Western Australia became a penal colony. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
