The Christmas Stories: With Original Vintage Illustrations by Harrison Cady and Others

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (24616 ratings)
Description:Thornton W. Burgess wrote his syndicated newspaper column for children, “Bedtime Stories”, for 48 years, from 1912 to 1960, totaling over 15,000 daily episodes. Most of his books were drawn from those newspaper stories. A daily newspaper episode would usually become a single chapter in a book. He made small changes to make the episodes work together better as a book.Back then, many newspapers did not print Christmas day editions. Burgess’ commitment to the syndicate required that he write Christmas day episodes for those newspapers that did print editions that day, but he didn’t want children whose parents subscribed to newspapers that didn’t to miss a day of a multi-day narrative. So the Christmas day stories were special. Children who read them could enjoy them, while children who did not read them would not miss them.A common theme in these Christmas stories was that the wild animals would experience the Christmas Spirit when Farmer Brown’s Boy distributed so much food to them that none were hungry, and even the predators did not chase prey. The Christmas Spirit for the animals was essentially a full belly! But later—and surprisingly for an author who otherwise placed such a premium on showing realistic wild animal behavior—Christmas took a magical turn, and the arrival of the Christmas Spirit no longer required food. You can enjoy reading Burgess for decades without encountering a story as infused with the—magical? supernatural?—as “The Wonderful Good-Feeling Day” (1951).For the two darkest Christmases of World War II, the stories turned stormy but promising, as Burgess took on the role of comforter in chief for millions of Americans of all ages who had good reason to wonder whether their democracy and way of life would survive. Most of Burgess’ animal story books were derived from his newspaper syndicated stories. But with one exception, none of these Christmas stories has ever been printed in book form before this volume. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
