The Annotated Edition of C.J. Dennis's 'Digger Smith'

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (20225 ratings)
Description:"Digger Smith" is the third verse-novel by the great early Twentieth century Australian writer, C.J. Dennis. It follows Dennis's best-sellers, "The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke", and "The Moods of Ginger Mick", and is also followed by the final book in the sequence, "Rose of Spadgers". All four books tell the connected stories of working class men and women, initially before the start of World War I, and then during World War I, at Gallipoli, with the last two dealing with the return of the Aussie veterans, the civilians waiting on the home-front, and the women and widows of the soldiers killed overseas. In writing about these working class larrikins, C.J. Dennis deliberately used their working class slang. Because almost all of the slang is now obsolete, and largely forgotten, Dennis's language presents an immediate barrier to modern readers, in the same way that Shakespeare's and Chaucer's versions of English are now hard to read without explanatory notes. Similarly, the stories are set in a time, and culture more than one hundred years old, with allusions to places and events that may now be unfamiliar to modern readers. This new annotated edition of "Digger Smith" provides thorough explanation of the obsolete slang, and the historical and cultural references. Supported by these annotations, modern readers can re-enter the world of Dennis's larrikins, and their women, be amused by Dennis's comedy, and touched by the pathos of ex-soldiers remembering fallen comrades and trying to create a new civilian life. Even when these books were first published, Dennis included a Glossary (of slang) "for genteel readers". A new, expanded Glossary is included as well as the annotations for the chapters. These annotated editions should restore C.J. Dennis to his rightful place as one of Australia's, and world's, great writers. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
