Description:Excerpt from Charles Auchester: A Memorial "No greater book will ever be written upon music," said the late Lord Beaconsfield, in writing of Charles Auchester, "and one day it will be recognised as the imaginative classic of that divine art." Yet, in spite of this, Charles Auchester has fallen into oblivion. The book has been out of print for many years - unknown to most of this generation, an enthusiasm to the few. Elizabeth Sara Sheppard, its author, was born at Blackheath in 1830. Her father was a clergyman who had taken high honours at St. John's, Cambridge; he was a clever scholar, but entirely without worldly wisdom. On her mother's side she traced her descent from Jewish ancestry, a fact in which she took an almost passionate pride, which reveals itself again and again in her books, wherein many sympathetic references to the Jews are to be found. From her earliest childhood she displayed a great love of poetry and music and a fondness for writing on all kinds of subjects. At the age of ten she wrote a drama called Boadicea, which was inspired, we are told, by a visit to a place where the British queen is supposed to have pitched her tent. Verse she wrote easily and quickly; metre and rhythm seemed to have no difficulties for her, and she seldom made corrections in the manuscripts which she scribbled at all odd moments when other children of her age would have been at play. Music was her chief joy, and as a tiny child she would steal away by herself to extemporise for hours on the organ in a neighbouring church, being careful before she began to play to wreathe the candlesticks of the organ with flowers, because their scent inspired her dreams and awoke her fancies. When this strange child was eleven she was an excellent Latin scholar, wrote French fluently, and read Goethe and Schiller in the original.
