Callister is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Engineering at the University of Utah. His teaching interests include writing and revising introductory materials science and engineering textbooks, in both print and electronic formats. He also enjoys developing ancillary resources, including instructional software and on-line testing/evaluation tools. Professor Balasubramaniam obtained his Bachelor of Technology degree from the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Institute of Technology, Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in 1984, securing the University Gold Medal. He went on to complete his PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA, in 1990. He served as an Adjunct Faculty at RPI, during which time he taught the materials science and engineering course in 1989?1990. Since 1990 he has been teaching, on his return to India, in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is the recipient of the Director's Citation for Best Teacher, several times at IIT Kanpur. In addition to excellence in teaching, Professor Balasubramaniam is active in research and development activities.
