The earliest account of Jewish settlement along the Rhine is dated from the year 321 in Cologne. Thus, it is assumed that the first Jews also lived in Speyer in Late Antiquity. Yet, with the collapse of state and church administration in the Migration Period and the decline of the urban Roman lifestyle, it must also be assumed that the Jewish communities dispersed.
