The Indians had surrounded the fort, and for days the inmates lived in fear of their lives, not knowing what the end might be. Yet by watching their opportunity, two men managed to leave the fort in the night and go for help. Traveling day and night, they only stopped to rest their horses until they reached the settlements of our people. My husband was among the number who went to their assistance. The families were moved back to their former homes, and the mission was broken up. It was never President Youug's way to encourage hostile measures with the Lamanites, but to show them the better way of life by treating them with forbearance and brotherly kindness. He therefore considered it best to recall those whom he had sent there, and wait a more favorable time for building up that portion of the country. Soon after that, negotiations were entered into by the leaders of our people and the officers of Johnson's Army, by which the soldiers were allowed to pass through Salt Lake City and camp in the western part of the valley. Not knowing how well they would carry out the treaty, President Young sent word to all the northern settlements of Utah to gather up their effects and move to the south.
