Bishop Dr. Wolfgang Huber has been Chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) since 2003 and succeeded Manfred Kock. He was succeeded by Bishop Margot Kassmann, the first woman in that position. Huber was the youngest of five brothers and lived during his childhood in the Black Forest in south-west Germany. He married Kara Huber and is the father of two sons and one daughter. His mother was a lawyer and his father was Ernst Rudolf Huber, a lawyer and German constitutional scholar. Huber studied at the universities of Heidelberg, Gottingen and Tubingen, worked as a minister in Wurttemberg, was appointed at the Forschungsstatte der Evangelischen Studiengemeinschaft in Heidelberg (FEST) (1968) and became its director in 1973. In 1980 he was appointed as Professor of Social Ethics at the University of Marburg, and in 1984 he became Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Heidelberg. From 1994-2009 he was bishop of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia, and in 2003 he was chosen as the chairperson of the EKD's council. He was also a member of the Christliche Pfadfinderschaft Deutschlands (a predecessor of the Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder) and is an active Kreuzpfadfinder, an adult member of Protestant Scouting in Germany. Huber is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Wolfgang Huber has led ecumenical relations with Pope Benedict XVI on behalf of the Protestant Church.
