He studied medicine in Paris, began working as a prosector in 1820, and received his agrgation in 1825. Shortly afterwards he was appointed professor of obstetrics at the University of Montpellier . In 1826, he published Manuel d'obsttrique, a textbook on obstetrics that was published in several editions. As a zoologist, Dugs conducted osteological and myological studies of amphibians, and also performed extensive research involving acarids (mites). In 1838, he published an influential work on comparative physiology, titled Trait de physiologie compare . He was a member of several learned societies, including the Acadmie de Mdecine and the Acadmie des sciences de Paris . He died in Montpellier on May 1, 1838 at the age of 40.
