4.9/5 (15167 ratings)
Description:A History of Roman Catholicism in the United States is a collection of fourteen essays on various aspects of Catholicism in the United States. Divided into three sections--"Beyond the Parish," "Presence in the World," and "Prophetic Catholicism"--these essays aim to take the reader beyond the traditional ways scholars have viewed and recounted the story of the Catholic Church in the United States. "Beyond the Parish" focuses on topics such as anti-Catholicism, rural Catholicism, Latino Catholics, and issues related to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and the U.S. government. The second section, "Presence in the World," consists of essays on the topics of: popular culture (film and literature), women religious, and the work of U.S. missionaries in other countries. "Prophetic Catholicism" consists of essays devoted to: Catholic Social Teaching (the Church's best kept secret), the relationship between African American Catholics and the Communist Party, "Praying in the Public Square"--Catholics in the civil rights movement, the abortion debate, and issues of war and peace--The Resurrection Project, which focuses on Mexican Catholics in Chicago, and a final essay discussing Vatican II and the American Catholic Church. The volume also includes and introductory essay and an epilogue. The editors' goal in producing this book was to give interested readers, including undergraduate and graduate students, an opportunity to examine the history of U.S. Catholicism from a variety of perspective that move beyond the traditional account of the immigrant, urban parish, which served as the focus for so many American Catholics during the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Although we recognize that this part of U.S. Catholic history is indeed important, this volume seeks to add some pieces that have been missing from many accounts of American Catholicism. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
