Four French consorts―queen Marie-Antoinette and empresses Joséphine Bonaparte, Marie-Louise and Eugénie―constructed their gardens betwixt and between court ritual and personal agency, where they transgressed sociopolitical boundaries in order to perform gender and identity politics.
