He was a consultant to clinicians and played an active role in developing evidence-based practice guidelines for patient care. His two previous books, Choosing Effective Laboratory Tests (coauthored with Jack W. Smith, M.D., Ph.D.) and The Right Test have been well received with multiple foreign language editions.
