Description:In writing this manuscript, over the course of several years, I came to realize that my lifelong search for meaning up to that point was merely a reflection of what was within me all along. I had wondered why I could never find this elusive truth which always seemed to be just beyond my fingertips and I struggled for years in my search for this truth.For most of my life I suffered from alcohol addiction and the consequences of substance abuse. Though I had always aspired to reach a higher purpose, I was trapped in the daily pursuit of the next fleeting high so that I would be able to escape the consequences of the world around me. This search for temporary gratification prevented me from hearing my true calling and from becoming my destiny. This period of struggle in my life also provided the material for some interesting stories.As I struggled to find meaning in life, in what I was going through, in my daily cycle of substance abuse, I continued to write about my experiences and my failures at uncovering that deeper meaning in life. I wrote angry prose and anguished poetry. I journaled about the highs I felt and the lows that I suffered, all the while bemoaning the fact that I wasn’t able to find my true vocation. In writing this story, the story of my life and the unusual circumstances I experienced, it suddenly occurred to me that the act of writing, which I had been using as an outlet for my feelings and to share my struggles all along, was the calling which I had been missing from my life up to that point. It was underneath my nose all along. It was at the tip of my fingers as they touched the keys. This discovery fulfilled my longing and gave me hope.. Contained in the manuscript are the stories that made me who I am today. In choosing which stories to share I sought what was unique to me and, yet, it is a universal story. My story is unique only in my telling it and the settings. I discovered that, unintentionally, my tale follows the age-old narrative of the doubt-filled pilgrim, the wretched seeker of truth, the Everyman.
