He was professor of systematic theology at Lund University from 1924 and was elected Bishop of Lund in 1948 (emeritus 1958). He is best known for his two-volume work Eros and Agape (first published in Swedish 1930-1936). Nygren's approach, along with that of Gustaf Auln, characterises what is referred to as 'Lundensian Theology'. Like his predecessor Bo Giertz, Grtner was theologically conservative and High Church . He was the writer of a number of books about the ministry of the Church as well as on New Testament subjects. He was one of the Swedish church leaders opposing the ordination of women in the Church of Sweden . He was also an episcopal Visitor of Societas Sanctae Birgittae .
