Excerpt: Alejandro Gonz lez I rritu (Spanish pronunciation: born August 15, 1963) is a Mexican film director. He was the first Mexican director to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. He announced the premiere of his latest production "Biutiful" for the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. He was born in Mexico City to Hector Gonz lez Gama and Luz Mar a I rritu. He grew up in a middle-class neighborhood on the edge of a dangerous area with a lot of gangs. His father used to be a rich banker, but when Alejandro was five or six years old, he went bankrupt and lost everything. Alejandro says his father has been his inspiration because he took care of his family "with the virtue of a warrior." His father started a business for himself buying fruits and vegetables in a sordid market in order to sell them to restaurants during the day. Even though he faced a lot of economic hardship he was very happy as a child. He started his career as a DJ in 1984 at the top-rated Mexican radio station WFM. In 1988 he began composing music for six Mexican feature films, including Garra de tigre (1989). He studied filmmaking in Maine and Los Angeles, under Polish film director Ludwik Margules and studied directing under Judith Weston in Los Angeles. In the nineties he was in charge of the production of Televisa, a Mexican TV company. By the time he was 27 he had become one of their youngest directors. In 1991, after Televisa, he set up the company Zeta Films to produce advertising, short films and television programs. It was at this time that he also started writing and shooting TV commercials.
