Buchanan grew up in a Dallas orphanage with but one dream: to make picture shows. He shot his first full-length movie, Apache Gold (aka Grubstake), in 1952; it featured Jack Klugman in his first film role. In one hit and run, he got permission to film Naughty Dallas (aka A Stripper Is Born) at Jack Ruby's Carousel Club in 1958 by promising Ruby a walk-on role, then dropped him--and his club--on the cutting room floor. Buchanan discovered Misty Rowe, the star of his most successful work, Goodbye, Norma Jean, while gazing out the window of his office.
